Crime in the Grangetown area of Sunderland SR2 has risen sharply for it’s second consecutive month.

Residents were told at last night’s Neighbourhood Policing meeting that in the five weeks from October 6, a total of 34 crimes have been recorded in the area, 24 related to the ASDA supermarket by Leechmere Road [Link to map].

Of the 24 crimes recorded that relate to the supermarket, 19 were for shoplifting offences.

It is thought that the sharp incline in recorded crime in the area is explained by the nearing of Christmas.

Bucking the trend of crime in the area, incidents of burglary continue to fall while police officers also remarked on a particularly quiet Bonfire Night on November 5.

Residents in the area of Hill view road [Link to map] area of Sunderland are invited to meet their Neighbourhood Police Officers at tomorrow night’s St. Michael’s Resident’s meeting at Auckland Homes from 6.30pm.

The next Neighbourhood Engagement meeting for the Grangetown area is 6.30pm on December 15, St. Aidan’s Church on Ryhope Road.
