A fly past by the world famous Red Arrows jets marked this year’s Remembrance and wreath-laying service on Burdon Road, Sunderland.

Crowds joined more than 300 serving members of the Armed Forces, around 200 members of the emergency services and 200 Forces veterans to pay tribute to those past and present serving the country. The Sunderland ceremony is said to be the largest outside of London.

In a moving touch, Mr Len Gibson, formerly of 125 Anti-Tank Regiment Royal Artillery and Prisoner of War (POW) on the ‘Death Railway’, read out The Far Easat POW Prayer, as below.

And we that are left to grow old with the years.

Remembering the heartache, the pain and the tears.

Hoping and praying that never again,

Man will sink to such sorrow and shame.

The price that was paid we will always remember.

Every day, every month, not just in November.

Sunderland Echo put together a Wall of Honour for people to pay their respects.
