“They don’t make ‘em like they used to…” That’s something you imagined your grandfather saying while sitting on the porch with a pipe. Sadly, I found myself saying this recently after watching The Return of the Jedi. I am an 80s baby and, as such, I grew up watching movies in the pre-CGI, pre-Matrix, pre-Lord of the Rings era – an era of filmmaking, I believe, superior to our own. I say this for three reasons. First, since there was no CGI, filmmakers had to be more inventive than they are now. They literally had to create optical illusions from scratch that required a higher level of ingenuity. Second, films of the past understood pacing and did more with less. Everything had more “weight” than today. Nowadays, movies try to outdo each other with more violence and special effects. The result is visual overkill. Third, films back then were a real risk. When Spielberg made Jaws, no one thought that a movie about a big fish would be a mega-blockbuster. Before Star Wars and Superman: The Movie, science fiction and comic books were for kids and b-movies. Failure would have meant setting back the genre by decades. Filmmakers knew they REALLY had to make a good product. Nowadays, even a mediocre film series (I’m looking at you The Mummy and The Fantastic Four) will yield nine figures.

So, enough with the set-up. Here’s the list in chronological order of the best movie moments from my childhood, and get ready for the overuse of the word “awesome.”

1. Superman Catches Lois Lane from the Helicopter (1978)

Superman: The Movie is one of the most underrated films of all time. When it came out in 1978, it was the biggest hit in Warner Bros history and created the modern comic book film genre, which now reigns as the biggest industry in Hollywood. Unfortunately, this film has been relegated to obscurity due to the success of the Batman films. Regardless, Superman: The Movie started it all and has one of the most memorable scenes of its era. It has all the hallmarks of a classic Superman rescue: The scene starts off with Lois Lane in trouble and Clark Kent stumbling into view where, upon sensing danger, tears off his shirt to reveal the Superman shield. Finally, Superman flies off to save the day to the tune of John Williams’ iconic score. To top it off, Superman has a cheesy line ready as he rescues Lois, in keeping with the style of the 70s and 80s.
